Paua Abalone displays the most intense color of any shell species

Whole Paua Abalone and Red Abalone shells

Paua Abalone shells are, however, smaller and thinner than Green Abalone or Red Abalone.
Because of the smaller size of the shells, Paua blanks will average 15% to 25% smaller than Green or Red Abalone shell blanks.

As of this date, DePaule Supply is the only company in the world producing Shell Blanks from Paua Abalone. We use only the best Jewelry Grade shells. Lower grades will not produce good shell blanks.
We take great care to grind the blanks to thickness and remove any defects in the blanks so that the blanks are good on both sides.

Most Select Blanks will be between 5/8 inch to 1 & 1/8 inches across, These we sell as “Paua Abalone, Select”.

From every 100 kilos of jewelery grade Paua shells that we process, we get only about 7 kilos of shell blanks. And of that 7 kilos, only about 1 or 2 ounces of “Large Blanks”. This is why the price is so high.
